A New Year – A New You

By Stuart R. Manoff, Esq. –
New Year New YouA new year is upon us, and with a new year comes new resolutions. For most people, the beginning of a new year really means the beginning of a “new you.” New Year’s resolutions often revolve around becoming a healthier and happier person. As a part of that goal to be better, people tend to resolve to lose weight, quit smoking, or to make new friends. Some people take the quest even further and use the beginning of a new year to make more dramatic and life-changing personal beginnings, such as finally addressing the issues in a struggling marriage.
Whether it is because holiday time off from work allows additional time for reflection, because spouses want to avoid disrupting their family until after the holidays are over, or because the chaos of the holiday
season becomes the last straw, many people who have realized their marriage is troubled make the final decision to file for divorce in the beginning of a new year. Sometimes, the end of an unhappy relationship is the first step necessary for a fresh start to begin on the path toward a new you.
For those who have resolved to divorce in the new year: do not rush the process, and make sure to take the time to do it right. Seek legal advice from an experienced Family Law attorney. The decisions made during a divorce will impact life for a great many years to come.
For those who are already divorced: resolve to improve post-divorce relationships, especially your relationship with your ex-spouse. Resolve to be amicable, to communicate, and to pick your battles. Your ex-spouse will always be a part of your life if you share children, and having a positive, workable relationship can make a world of difference in your overall happiness and outlook on life.
Most importantly in the new year: resolve to be a better and happier parent for your children. Remember that they have gone through the divorce process along with you, and they especially need you to be healthy and happy so that you can provide them with the love and attention they deserve.
Including any of the above resolutions this year will put you on the road to a “new you.” If you are considering a new beginning by filing a divorce in Florida, you should seek legal advice from a Family Law Attorney who is experienced and who can help you navigate through the divorce process. The decision to end a marriage is a life-changing decision, and you will want an experienced attorney who understands the process to be on your side.
