Janice, a 34 year old therapist came to our center on day 3 of her migraine. Even with medications, her migraines would usually last between 2 to 5 days. She had dealt with headaches for 15 years and had just heard of neurofeedback treatment.
When she arrived, her headache was a 5 on a scale of 10. Earlier it had been an 8. Based on a long history, she would expect it to last another day or two. After 20 minutes of neurofeedback training, it was a 1. She was amazed. We discussed how continued neurofeedback training, over time, would typically reduce the number of headaches and the intensity.
Janice decided to continue training and by the second week of training, she reported no more migraines. She had been experiencing at least one migraine per week for the last 15 years. By training her brain, she was able to help her brain change it’s migraine pattern.
Neurofeedback is brain biofeedback.  It has been proven as a non-medication, non-invasive and painless method to relieve migraine headache pain. The Center for Brain Training offers neurofeedback for migraine headache relief.
In most cases, when clients come in with a migraine, it will dramatically reduce by the end of the session.  They won’t have to wait to know. The real value however, is what happens over time. Through continued training of the EEG (brainwave patterns), clients’ brains learn to function with better self-control and stability. With better regulation, migraines lessen, oftentimes disappearing for good.
If you take medications for migraines and still suffer from pain, or if the medications provide relief but you are worried about the side effects, you are a good candidate for neurofeedback training. As the brain becomes healthier and more balanced through neurofeedback training, migraine and headache drugs can often be reduced or eliminated. It’s an effective alternative to medications, reducing both the frequency and intensity of migraines and headaches.
Clinical Study Proves Neurofeedback is Effective
Recently, the journal Behaviorial and Brain Functions released a report citing that participants in two different clinical studies experienced fewer and less intense migraines following neurofeedback training.
When nothing else seemed to help, the neurofeedback training did. A significant component of this study was that all of the participants had been on medications for years, trying multiple pharmaceuticals, but still suffered from intense migraines. So the migraines these patients were experiencing were some of the toughest to resolve.
Results showed that 70% of the participants showed a significant reduction in the frequency of their migraines. Following neurofeedback training, many of these patients also experienced improvements in over 50% of non-targeted symptoms such as in anxiety, depression, focus and sleep.
Goal of Neurofeedback Training
Training away a migraine in progress is not an isolated incidence. It is common to stop a migraine in progress with neurofeedback, if someone can come in while they are having one. But that’s not the goal of neurofeedback and training. The goal is to reduce, over time, the frequency and intensity of the migraines, in some cases eliminating them completely.
