Migraines? Break the Cycle New Medical Technology Helps Migraines

By Ed Pigott, Ph.D. and Michael Cohen, Director –
MigrainesA 21 year old student from Miami came to our center to our center after struggling for about 10 years with chronic migraines. She had tried many medications. Some helped, but she still got bad migraines. During her first visit, she rated her migraine pain level a 6 out of 10. After 20 minutes of neurofeedback training, a new type of migraine therapy, the pain level dropped to a 2. She said it took normally 8 or more hours even with medications to reduce it. She trained for several months. One year later, she reported that she seldom has problems with migraines any more.
This is not a unique story. We’ve had 8 year olds and 80 year old clients with chronic migraines whose cycle of migraines were broken. But one training session cannot break a cycle. Typically, if neurofeedback is going to help, the client will notice reduction in migraine symptoms within 8 to 10 sessions. In our clinical experience, 75% to 80% of clients notice in 8 sessions, but sometimes after one or two.
We saw a fifty year old male client with 30 years of bad migraines. He said neurofeedback had more impact on reducing his migraines than anything he’d found- and with no meds or side effects. He didn’t understand why he hadn’t heard about it before. Unfortunately, a lot of doctors who deal with migraines have not yet been exposed to this new technology.
Neurofeedback uses medical technology to monitor brain activity. It provides feedback that helps the individual change the brain pattern. It has been proven as a non-medication, non-invasive method to relieve migraine headache pain. The Center for Brain Training offers neurofeedback for migraine headache relief.
If you take medications for migraines and still suffer from pain, or if the medications provide relief but you are worried about the side effects, you are a good candidate for neurofeedback training. As the brain becomes healthier and more balanced through neurofeedback training, migraine and headache drugs can often be reduced or eliminated. It’s an effective alternative to medications, reducing both the frequency and intensity of migraines and headaches.
Clinical Study Proves Neurofeedback is Effective
The journal of Behavioral and Brain Function published a study with 37 migraineurs. The patients experienced fewer and less intense migraines following neurofeedback training.
Significantly, all of the participants had been on medications for years, trying multiple pharmaceuticals, but still suffered from intense migraines. So the migraines these patients were experiencing were some of the toughest to resolve.
Results showed that 70% of the participants showed a significant reduction in the frequency of their migraines. Following neurofeedback training, many of these patients also experienced improvements in over 50% of non-targeted symptoms such as in anxiety, depression, focus and sleep.
Goal of Neurofeedback Training
Training away a migraine in progress is not an isolated incidence. It is common to stop a migraine in progress with neurofeedback, if someone can come in while they are having one. But that’s not the goal of neurofeedback and training. The goal is to reduce, over time, the frequency and intensity of the migraines, in some cases eliminating them completely.
If you or someone you know has been unsuccessful at relieving migraine pain, call the Center for Brain Training to discuss your individual situation and learn more about how neurofeedback could eliminate the pain once and for all.
