Breast Cancer Survivor

Thanks Komen South Florida Affiliate Staff, Local Volunteer for Guidance

Breast CancerMarion Pollock is more than a breast cancer survivor: she is a mother of two, a nail technician, and a supporter of the South Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.
Before Marion received life-saving treatments at Bethesda Memorial Hospital Women’s Center, she was fundraising to support her local Affiliate. Then came her stage 1 cancer diagnosis. Marion, who works at The Spa at Hunter’s Run in Boynton Beach, was 32 years old and uninsured. She turned to her client and friend, Bonnie Howard, who was also a longtime Komen South Florida Affiliate volunteer.
“I contacted Bonnie right away,” Marion remembered. “There’s nothing that we can’t talk about. Bonnie was a Hunter’s Run Race Team Captain and is a former team liaison in Boynton Beach. She has ties to the Komen South Florida Affiliate and knew people who could help me find local treatment resources.”
It was just the connection Marion needed. She contacted Komen and was referred to Bethesda Memorial Hospital Women’s Center for her chemotherapy, lumpectomy, and radiation. Two years later, she has a clean bill of health. She found an important resource with the Komen South Florida Affiliate and works hard to spread the word about the Affiliate’s services in the community.
“Uninsured people don’t know that Komen can help them,” Marion reflected. “I referred one recently diagnosed woman to Komen, and I hope I will be able to help more people in the future.”
Marion knows that because 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the Affiliate stay in the South Florida area, the Affiliate can be a source of screening and education referrals and a great place to volunteer. If you know anyone who needs education or screening services in Palm Beach, Martin, or St. Lucie counties, have them call the Komen South Florida Affiliate’s hotline at (561) 514-3020 today. To find out how to volunteer or donate, call the Affiliate or visit www.komensouthflorida.org.
