Slimming Down for the Summer

By Nicole Marchand, Registered Dietition –
“Can I eat this?”
“How many calories is that?”
“My goal is so far away, where do I start?”
Slimming Down for the SummerThese are some of the questions I get on a regular basis. Weight loss signs, ads, billboards, tips, and books are everywhere.  Unfortunately, most of the people giving weight loss and diet information aren’t qualified. Are you getting your information from a qualified source?
People can call themselves a “nutritionist” after taking a few hour long course online and receiving a certificate.  Registered dietitians are licensed. They have to complete an undergraduate degree in nutrition then go on to do either combined, masters and internship, program or just an internship program. Once completing the program, the individual must pass a board exam to practice. Legally, only registered dietitians are allowed to design customized meal plans for clients.  Registered dietitians are considered the nutrition experts!
There are thousands of diets available making claims to lose 10 pounds in 10 days. The harsh reality is crash and FAD diets don’t work long term. You may be able to lose weight quickly, but aren’t able to keep it off. Ninety percent of those who lose weight regain the lost weight within two years. The sad reality is that up to 45% of people that start a weight loss program will drop out. Don’t waste your time, money and energy on something that doesn’t work.
You don’t’ need a diet, you need a lifestyle change. It’s time to rethink how you think about food and the fuel for your body.  There are three types of macronutrients: carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Your body needs all three! The way to lose weight is to have the right proportion of these macronutrients that is ideal for you! Many people ask, “how many calories do I need?” The truth is everyone’s calorie needs are different depending on various factors such as age, height, weight, goals, presence of disease, exercise and many more things need to be taken into consideration. Working with an expert to determine your needs will help you lose weight efficiently and effectively.
