No More Goop: Introducing Digital Orthodontic Impressions

By Dr. Minelle Tendler, DMD –
No More GoopOrthodontics is truly an evidence-based dental specialty, constantly improved through research and development of new technology.  The main reason for this trend is that orthodontists  are constantly striving to make the experience of braces more comfortable and amenable to every patient.  Unpleasant incidents at the orthodontist tend to linger, and the most commonly occurring are the dental impressions taken to make plaster models, retainers and appliances, including Invisalign®.
We all remember the uncomfortable feeling, the mess and the gagging reflex produced by the putty-filled impression trays.
“Can you put less goop on my tray?”, “Isn’t there another way to make a mold?”, “Can’t they make my retainer from a photo?” were questions I used to hear all the time.  Well now there is another option…the iTero®.
The iTero® Intra-Oral Digital Scanner is the latest in dental impression technology.  The scanner takes a digital impression with a laser (no radiation) producing a highly accurate, three-dimensional digital image of the individual characteristics of the teeth and gums.  That means no more goop or gagging while taking impressions before and after braces, or for Invisalign®.  The scan process allows the patient to breathe and swallow normally while the impression is taken, without any unpleasant taste. In addition, the patient can also follow along on the monitor while the practitioner is taking the 3-D scan.  The digital model is produced in real time, right before the patient’s eyes.
The images captured by the iTero® scanner are combined to produce digital models of the patient’s teeth and bite.  The digital model is then incorporated into a file, which can then be securely sent to the orthodontic laboratory to manufacture the desired appliance.  This simplifies and quickens the entire process, rendering better-fitting appliances in a much shorter period of time.
The inherent weaknesses of the traditional system of alginate (putty) or PVS impressions are eliminated when a digital scan is taken.  For example, uneven mixing of the impression material, distortion of the impression from early removal from the patient’s mouth, bubbles in the impression or the poured stone models, all could potentially lead to ill-fitting appliances, that have to be adjusted chair-side.  Sometimes even multiple impressions have to be taken because the laboratory will ask for clearer, better defined models.  This only leads to further patient discomfort.
The iTero® is all about keeping you comfortable while delivering precise imagery, without the putty-filled impression tray that makes you gag! What a great way of making a first impression!
Moreover, when you combine the digital model produced by the iTero® with Invisalign’s newest software, the Invisalign Outcome Simulator, you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.  Using the simulator often helps patients make the final decision on their treatment options.
This top-quality, innovative service is another example of our mission to go above and beyond at Tendler Orthodontics.
